The Colony Manager serves as the operational backbone of the canine and swine research colonies at the Francis Owen Blood Research Laboratory (FOBRL). In this working leadership capacity, you will ensure predictable colony performance and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare. Your primary mission is to seamlessly integrate clinical care with research activities, acting as the bridge between study requirements and daily colony workflows.
You will function as the operational integrator of clinical, research, and colony systems, translating complex study needs into coordinated schedules, documentation, and resource optimization strategies. This role demands advanced technical expertise in emergency care, hemostasis management, and breeding execution, while simultaneously fostering a professional and transparent team culture.
As a working leader, your day involves supervising technicians in animal care while providing hands-on guidance on critical procedures. You will collaborate closely with the Associate Director, Principal Investigators, veterinarians, and research teams to align colony operations with scientific goals. Key responsibilities include leading the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), managing electronic medical record (EMR) integration, and ensuring all activities meet rigorous regulatory compliance standards. Your work directly supports timely clinical decision-making and long-term program outcomes.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, or related field preferred.
Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum four years of experience supporting large animal research or clinical programs, including participation in regulated research environments. Experience with canine and/or swine colony operations, including breeding coordination, breeding techniques, whelping, maternal and neonatal care.
