The Research Associate will independently design, collect, and analyze data for experimental projects investigating the origin of genetic coding and protein synthesis. The work focuses on two primary areas: the translatomics of ribosome-free coded peptide bond formation, and structure/function studies of reconstructed aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase cognate tRNA pairs that likely resemble evolutionary intermediates in the genetic code.
This position offers considerable independence and facilitates collaboration with multiple groups supported by two funding sources. The selected candidate will be expected to co-author papers and present results at meetings and conferences.
The role blends independent scientific inquiry with essential laboratory management. You will design and implement experimental protocols, maintain scientific and budgetary records, and act as the liaison for Health and Safety. Your daily work will involve PCR, in vitro transcription, PAGE purification of RNAs, enzymatic reactions, protein expression and purification, and single turnover and steady-state enzymatic assays.
While specific technical experience with RNA or enzymology is preferred, we value independent initiative, curiosity, enthusiasm for laboratory experimentation, and a commitment to the scientific method above mastery of any single skill.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, (Molecular) Biology, or a related field. The ideal applicant possesses extensive experience and enthusiasm for molecular biology, preparative biochemistry, laboratory conditions for RNA biology, enzymology, and data analysis.
