Pregnancy Justice's research team documents pregnancy-related prosecutions and their impact across the United States. We equip allies and policymakers with the knowledge and tools to advance the human rights of pregnant people. Our flagship initiative, the Pregnancy Prosecutions Tracking Study, is an interdisciplinary, mixed-methods, and first-of-its-kind study to document the extent and nature of pregnancy criminalization in the three years following the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision. This project operates as an academic-advocacy partnership between Pregnancy Justice and legal academic scholars in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas, and Oklahoma.
The Research Assistant is a vital member of this interdisciplinary team, dedicated to uncovering the realities of pregnancy criminalization. You will work closely with the Senior Research Manager to identify cases, collect data, and conduct basic analysis. Your work will directly support the creation of data visualizations, brief case narratives, and research reports that inform policy and public understanding. This is a grant-funded position running from August 17, 2026, through April 30, 2027, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding.
Pregnancy Justice fosters a culture grounded in rigor, diligence, and a desire for excellence. We value integrity, strategic thinking, and sound judgment, encouraging staff to approach work with a growth mentality and emotional intelligence. As a unionized workplace represented by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys – UAW Local 2325, we are committed to maintaining a respectful, transparent, and collaborative labor-management relationship.
Our operational model supports focused work; we endeavor to avoid internal meetings on Fridays to allow for quiet time, and staff may sign off early on Friday afternoons provided deadlines are met. While the role is primarily hybrid (2 days per week in our NYC offices), occasional travel and flexible hours may be required to meet operational demands.
We recognize that members of marginalized communities often underestimate their qualifications. If you are excited about this opportunity but are unsure if your past experience aligns perfectly with every criterion, we strongly encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and want to consider how your talents can bring value to our mission.
Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to respond to every individual or engage in follow-up communications via email, phone, or social media. If you require reasonable accommodations to participate in the application or interview process, please email HR@pregnancyjusticeus.org with the subject line "Reasonable Accommodation Request."
Pregnancy Justice is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy, national origin, citizenship, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, military status, or any characteristic protected by law.
