This position serves as the foundational role for Registered Nurses at BWMC with more than 12 months of experience. As a Clinical Nurse I, you will independently provide and coordinate care within the MedSurg Unit on the 5th Floor, functioning as a fully effective member of the multidisciplinary patient care team. Your work is central to the Nursing Mission, Vision, and Values, focusing on improving patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness at the unit level.
You will transition from task-based care to holistic care, collaborating with patients, families, and colleagues to create a supportive environment. This role involves serving as a clinical resource for peers, participating in unit governance, and modeling professional practice to advance group standards. You will be accountable to your peers for the advancement of unit practice and to the Nurse Manager for the totality of work performance.
Your day involves integrating evidence into practice and utilizing the Teach Back methodology for patient education. You will participate in unit-based clinical practice activities, assist in developing clinical guidelines, and contribute to process improvement initiatives. Leadership responsibilities may include delegating to team members, serving as a preceptor or mentor to new nurses and students, and supporting charge nurse decisions. You will also engage in professional development by completing continuing education hours, contributing to unit education, and participating in research or regulatory readiness activities.
Patient safety is a core priority; you will actively identify risks, report adverse events, and ensure compliance with hospital policies and universal precautions. The role requires adaptability, as you may be floated to similar units based on acuity and census, and must be prepared for rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
Candidates must hold a current Maryland RN licensure prior to beginning orientation. Those hired on or after July 1, 2018, are required to complete a Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing within five years of hire. Applicants with a gap in nursing experience of five years or more must complete a refresher course within the past six months.
