This position serves as the foundational level for registered nurses at BWMC with greater than 12 months of experience. As a fully effective member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team, you will independently provide and coordinate care within the MedSurg Unit on the 5th Floor. Your role involves transitioning from task-based care to holistic care, ensuring patients, families, and colleagues collaborate effectively in the delivery of services.
You will be accountable to your peers for advancing group practice on the unit and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. This role requires you to model the full range of nursing professional practice, striving to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost effectiveness while holding the Service Standards of the Nursing Mission, Vision, and Values.
Your day will involve collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care that addresses specific patient and family needs. You will integrate evidence into practice, utilizing Teach Back methodology for patient education. Beyond direct patient care, you will participate in unit governance, clinical practice activities, and process improvement efforts to enhance Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators and patient safety.
You will also serve as a resource for colleagues, potentially acting as a preceptor, coach, or mentor to new nurses and students. Depending on unit needs, you may assume charge nurse responsibilities, participate in committee work, and support organizational initiatives such as health fairs or regulatory readiness.
This role requires working in a clean, well-lit environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases, requiring strict adherence to universal precautions. The position involves physical demands including lifting up to 35 lbs. for patient care and up to 50 lbs. for equipment, as well as standing, sitting, bending, and walking for the duration of scheduled shifts. You may face frequent interruptions, multiple crisis situations, and potential verbal or physical abuse from patients.
The schedule includes rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties. There is also the potential to be floated to similar units based on acuity and census.
Candidates must possess a current Maryland RN licensure prior to beginning orientation. Those hired on or after July 1, 2018, are required to complete a Bachelor of Science from a College of Nursing within five years of hire. A gap in nursing experience of five years or more requires successful completion of a refresher course within the past six months.
