Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is dedicated to linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
The Safety and Environmental Compliance Department is responsible for the implementation, oversight, and coordination of the agency's passenger and employee safety programs. This includes rail safety education, emergency evacuation training for first responders, and the reporting of railroad incident and accident data to federal and state regulatory agencies. The department also manages environmental compliance functions, including inspections for air quality and hazardous materials storage, environmental mitigation, and the hazardous waste disposal program.
In this role, you will provide complex administrative support for environmental services contracts, develop cost estimates, and oversee vendor activities. You will conduct field inspections and audits to assess regulatory compliance, advising engineering and construction staff on any deficiencies. The position involves managing investigations and remedial activities, ensuring field work adheres to agency and government safety rules, and coordinating environmental planning and research to support emergency response activities related to hazardous releases or spills.
You will work under both inside and outside environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. The role requires the ability to wear a half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). While you will coordinate the team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks, and provide guidance and training, this position is not a supervisory role.
Qualified veterans who meet the minimum requirements will receive outreach during the recruitment process in accordance with Federal and State laws, including the Illinois Veterans Preference Act. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview or job offer; the most qualified candidate will be selected.
