About the Role
The Physician Assistant (PA) II Surgical Specialist is a licensed health professional who practices medicine under the supervision of a physician, serving as a surgical assistant and a leader within the professional team. This role goes beyond surgical assistance to include the coordination of care, participation in education, and deep engagement in clinical practice and patient care management.
As a key member of the surgical team, the PA communicates, plans, and implements care directly alongside surgeons, surgical techs, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advanced practice providers. The position requires abiding by the rules and regulations of medical staff and PA certifying and regulating bodies, governed by the Physician Assistant Practice Agreement.
Day in the Life
A significant portion of this role involves assisting the surgeon during procedures, performing first assistant duties such as tissue retraction and suturing, and executing additional procedures based on specialty training and privileges. Outside the operating room, the PA obtains detailed medical histories, performs physical examinations, and develops comprehensive patient management plans.
The role demands strong coordination of referrals to specialty and social services, ensuring continuity of care throughout the preoperative and postoperative periods. The PA orders and interprets diagnostic and laboratory tests, manages medications, and provides counseling to patients and their families regarding therapeutic regimens, emotional well-being, and health maintenance.
Beyond direct patient care, the PA II acts as a mentor and preceptor to new or student physician assistants. The role also involves facilitating quality initiatives, process improvement projects, and research within the department or clinic, while ensuring accurate billing for services rendered.
