As a Patient Transport Driver (PTD) at WCCHC, you are more than just a driver; you are a vital link in the spectrum of enabling services that connect our patients to essential healthcare. This position exists to provide safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation to qualified patients, ensuring that barriers to care are removed through reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities.
Working within the philosophical framework set by our Board of Directors and adhering to program directives, you will actively participate in the special activities of the health center. Your role extends beyond operating vehicles to providing extended, professional services that begin with a warm greeting and end with a safe drop-off. By building genuine relationships and demonstrating empathy, you create the most positive transport experience possible for our passengers.
Your day involves safely operating a diverse fleet of company vehicles, including the 14-passenger ADA accessible Handi-Van style bus with a wheelchair lift, the Mobile School Based Clinic Bus, and various Dental and Mobile Clinic Vans. A core part of your responsibility is the safe and proper loading and unloading of passengers, with specific attention to securing wheelchair users.
Efficiency is key, requiring you to analyze and select the best routes to ensure timely pick-ups and drop-offs. Beyond driving, you will maintain accurate logs, perform data entry, assist with appointment scheduling, and handle vehicle maintenance reporting. You will also be responsible for providing timely and accurate reports on any accidents or incidents, always keeping safety as the top priority.
To join our team, candidates must possess a High School diploma or equivalent and have a minimum of 2 years of experience in quality medical transportation services. You must hold a current Standard Class Type 4 Hawaii State Driver's License (for vehicles between 15,001 – 26,000 GVWR) or a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for heavier vehicles or those transporting 16+ passengers. Additionally, you must be at least 21 years old and maintain a valid DOT Physical Exam clearance and yearly updated driver's traffic abstract.
Certifications are essential for this role, including current BLS/BCLS certification (maintained biannually per AHA guidelines), OSHA training in Body Mechanics, and certification as a Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician. Experience in a health or human service setting is highly desirable, as is a willingness to undergo defensive driving training and complete the Driver Improvement Program (DIP) with the Hawaii Transportation Association.
