About the Mission

The Correctional Managed Care team is dedicated to addressing the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). Our goal is to provide compassionate, high-quality care to individuals within the correctional system.

About the Role

This position serves as a vital support pillar within a unique healthcare environment located inside prisons, jails, or juvenile detention centers. You will provide basic technical assistance and supportive patient care, ensuring the needs of individual patients are met throughout their assigned areas.

In this role, you will be the eyes and hands of the nursing team, assisting with patient activities, personal hygiene, feeding, and mobility. You will collect and document critical data such as vital signs, height, weight, and intake/output, while performing point-of-care testing (POCT). Your work requires maintaining a clean, safe environment, adhering to strict infection control measures, and ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.

The work environment presents specific challenges and hazards, including exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and potentially disoriented or combative patients. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are required to ensure the safety of both staff and patients.

Hiring Process

Candidates must possess current BLS-HP certification and meet one of the following educational or experience criteria:

  • Completion of a recognized Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, Medical Corpsman, EMT, or UTMB Hospital Aide training program.
  • Two years of experience in a direct patient care environment.
  • Current enrollment in a recognized School of Nursing program with completion of the first semester (including clinical concepts and health assessment).

Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.

Equal Opportunity

UTMB Health strives to provide equal opportunity employment without regard to race, color, religion, age, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, genetic information, disability, veteran status, or any other basis protected by institutional policy or by federal, state, or local laws. As a Federal Contractor, UTMB Health takes affirmative action to hire and advance protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.
