About the Role
Under the supervision of the Chief of Pathology and the Laboratory Administrative Director, this position serves as a vital support to pathologists in the receipt, preparation, and examination of surgical tissue specimens and autopsies. The role ensures that all specimens are appropriately logged, processed, and disposed of in a timely and safe manner. Success in this position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment in responding to a changing workload while maintaining a courteous and accurate approach to every task.
Team Environment
This role operates within a Labor/Management Partnership environment. The team collaborates closely with pathologists, clinicians, and coworkers to maintain high standards of laboratory operations. Strong interpersonal skills and a customer focus are essential for effectively supporting the department's mission and working alongside the pathology team.

Key Responsibilities
- check_circleLog specimens and enter patient data into the computer database
- check_circleAssist pathologists with gross examination of surgical and autopsy specimens
- check_circleConduct daily morgue census and verify autopsy requirements
- check_circleTrain staff in non-grossing duties as assigned
- check_circleDistribute slides to pathologists and manage filing of laboratory records
- check_circleMaintain wet tissue storage and dispose of hazardous wastes safely
- check_circleReceive, transport, and verify identification of surgical and cytology specimens
- check_circleProcess, prepare, and distribute tissue sections according to written procedures
Requirements
- verifiedAA in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology, or equivalent with 60 semester hours (min 6 chemistry, 6 biology, 12 chemistry/biology/medical technology) from accredited institution
- verifiedOR qualified as medical technologist on or before Feb 28, 1992
- verifiedOR high school graduate by April 24, 1995 with HHS approved training or 50-week military course and MOS Medical Laboratory Specialist
- verifiedCurrent pathology experience including receipt and processing of surgical specimens
- verifiedGood working knowledge of basic clinical laboratory and pathology terminology
- verifiedBasic computer keyboard skills and word processing of 20 wpm
- verifiedAbility to read, write, and speak English

Current pathology technical assistant experience. Experience in assisting pathologists in post mortem procedures.
