Under the supervision of the Chief of Pathology and the Laboratory Administrative Director, this position serves as a vital support to pathologists in the receipt, preparation, and examination of surgical tissue specimens and autopsies. The role is designed to ensure that all specimens are appropriately logged, processed, and disposed of in a timely and safe manner. Success in this position requires the ability to exercise sound judgment in responding to a changing workload while maintaining a courteous and accurate approach to every task.
Your day will involve receiving, transporting, and verifying the identification of gross surgical and cytology specimens, often picking them up from the laboratory and surgery departments. You will be responsible for accurately labeling specimens, requisitions, and cassettes, as well as entering critical data into the computer database. The role includes processing and preparing specimens for outside laboratories and intra-facility consultations, performing tissue sections according to strict policies, and assisting pathologists with gross examinations by setting up equipment and supplies.
You will also maintain wet tissue storage, ensuring proper rotation and disposal of tissues while disinfecting storage cabinets and handling hazardous waste in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Additional duties include managing slide distribution, filing, stocking supplies, handling mail and report distribution, and answering telephone inquiries. In some instances, you may assist with the preparation of fetal or infant cadavers and conduct daily morgue censuses to verify autopsy requirements.
