The Pathologist Assistant position within the Anatomic Pathology Lab at OU Health is designed to support critical diagnostic workflows through precise specimen handling and laboratory operations. This role exists to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of pathology testing, serving as a vital link between specimen collection and final diagnosis. The position operates under direct supervision and adapts to the specific needs of the laboratory, ranging from routine histology tasks to assisting in complex autopsy procedures.
Day-to-day responsibilities include performing gross descriptions of simple or limited specimens, preparing frozen section slides, and assisting during autopsies. The role requires strict adherence to authorized technical procedures, ensuring that patient results are reported within established turn-around times. You will manage the reception and registration of specimens into the electronic medical record, calibrate laboratory instruments, and maintain detailed, legible records. The position also involves working on call for autopsies, photographing specimens for documentation, and actively participating in professional development through annual competency assessments.
This opportunity is available across three distinct levels (1-3), tailored to your education, experience, and certifications. Level 1 focuses on foundational technical experience with an associate's degree. Level 2 requires a bachelor's degree and certification or board eligibility as a Pathologist Assistant. Level 3 is designed for experienced professionals with a bachelor's degree from an accredited program or significant "grandfathered" experience, requiring advanced certification and five or more years of relevant experience.
