About Shasta County

Shasta County offers all the amenities of the big city while retaining a comfortable small-town atmosphere. With its natural beauty, affordable housing, excellent educational system, abundance of recreational opportunities, and excellent quality of life, Shasta County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

About the Department

The District Attorney's office is comprised of three main units: The Prosecution Unit, the Bureau of Investigations, and the Crime Victims Assistance Center (CVAC). The District Attorney acts as the public prosecutor for all crimes committed in Shasta County, evaluating reported crimes to determine if sufficient evidence exists to prosecute individuals for felony and misdemeanor offenses.

The office is also empowered to conduct independent investigations through sworn peace officers in the Bureau of Investigations. The CVAC meets the needs of victims in the community through collaborative services, assisting and advocating for safety, healing, justice, and restitution. The criminal justice process is often confusing and overwhelming, and the CVAC unit helps victims navigate it. The office is supported by a Fiscal team, in-house IT department, Community Education team, and administrative professionals who ensure efficient operations throughout the department.

About the Role

The Paralegal I and II positions provide paraprofessional legal support to attorney staff within the Prosecution Unit. Under the supervision of attorneys, incumbents perform legal research, prepare legal documents, and apply knowledge of legal theory and procedures.

Paralegal I is the entry-level classification, initially performing routine duties under close supervision while learning the work. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and complex. Paralegal II is the fully qualified journey-level classification, performing the full range of duties independently with judgment and initiative. Both levels may train clerical staff and assist in the preparation and analysis of legal documents, routine legal research, and the application of technical legal knowledge.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and a strong communicator capable of working cooperatively with attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, and outside agencies. Experience in criminal prosecution, legal research, writing, and analytical work is essential. The successful candidate will be proactive, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating sound judgment with confidential information.

Hiring Process

Responses to supplemental questions are required and must be submitted with a completed application. The oral exam is tentatively scheduled for June 2026. The final filing date is May 29, 2026, at 12:00 PM.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required. Additionally, incumbents must meet specific educational or experience requirements as defined by the California Business and Professions Code, section 6450, including holding an ABA-approved paralegal certificate, a specific degree with law-related coursework, or a combination of a degree/diploma and supervised law-related experience. Incumbents are also required to fulfill mandatory continuing education requirements.
