Established in 1928, Kanuga is an independent non-profit organization nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Spanning 1,400 acres, this retreat and learning center is dedicated to outdoor stewardship, offering year-round programs that connect people with nature, foster personal growth, and build community. While historically affiliated with The Episcopal Church, Kanuga welcomes a diverse audience—including schools, nonprofits, and businesses—through its retreat center, summer camps, and environmental education initiatives.
Outdoor education is central to Kanuga's mission. Leveraging the rich biodiversity of the Southern Appalachian ecosystem, the organization engages thousands of participants annually in environmental experiences designed to inspire a deeper connection to the natural world. The Outdoor Educator plays a vital role in delivering high-quality outdoor education and supporting all outdoor initiatives, including programs offered through the Mountain Trail Outdoor School (MTOS).
In this full-time, seasonal position, you will live on-site in a supportive community while leading immersive experiences. Your day-to-day involves conducting teaching blocks and evening programs, adapting lesson plans to fit your style and the learners' needs, and fostering an inclusive environment for young people and adults. You will be part of a professional community of educators, contributing to a culture of growth and resilience.
On-site living is required and includes private bedrooms, shared bathrooms, kitchen access, laundry facilities, and porches. Residents enjoy immediate access to 12 miles of hiking trails and 1,400 acres of natural woodlands and lakes. As an on-site educator, you will also serve as on-call staff as assigned.
Before the season begins, all educators participate in a paid three-week training program. This intensive preparation focuses on teaching Kanuga and MTOS's experiential outdoor education curriculum, with a specific emphasis on social and emotional learning and resiliency.
We are looking for individuals with a willingness to work outdoors, a knowledge of the natural world, and a desire to grow as educators. If you are ready to help connect people with nature while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards, we invite you to apply.
Kanuga is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
