This position serves as an integral member of the surgical team, collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, RNs, and other surgical personnel to deliver comprehensive patient care. The role encompasses responsibilities before, during, and after surgery, strictly adhering to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and AST Standards of Practice.
As a Surgical Technician, you will function across five of the six available specialties, assisting in direct patient care within the operating room. Your day-to-day involves demonstrating appropriate aseptic techniques, including scrubbing, gowning, gloving, draping, and performing surgical counts. You will select and prepare necessary supplies and equipment, organize the sterile field, and operate surgical instruments. A key aspect of the role is anticipating the surgeon's needs to pass appropriate instruments and assist in exposing the surgical field. Additionally, you will perform wound closures (subcutaneous and skin) under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
Beyond the operating room, you will participate in general activities to foster a highly effective team environment. This includes engaging in performance improvement (PI) activities, continuing education, the planning and orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness. You are expected to maintain a keen awareness of the department's needs and the specific requirements of assigned rooms and tasks.
The role requires the ability to continuously stand or walk. You must be capable of lifting, handling, or carrying material and equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs), such as supplies used by nurses, LPNs, and physical therapists.
