This position serves as an integral member of the surgical team, collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, RNs, and other surgical personnel to deliver comprehensive patient care. The role assumes appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery, strictly adhering to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and AST Standards of Practice.
As a Surgical Technician, you will function across five of the six available specialties, assisting in direct patient care within the operating room. Your day-to-day involves demonstrating appropriate aseptic techniques, including scrubbing, gowning, gloving, draping, and performing surgical counts according to department policy. You will select and prepare the necessary supplies and equipment for surgical cases, organize instrumentation and the sterile field, and operate all surgical equipment.
A key aspect of this role is anticipating the surgeon's needs by passing appropriate instruments and assisting in the exposure of the surgical field. Under the direct supervision of a surgeon, you will also perform wound closure for subcutaneous and skin layers. Beyond the operating room, you will participate in general activities to foster a highly effective team environment, engage in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, pursue continuing education, assist in the orientation of new personnel, and contribute to emergency preparedness.
