This position serves as an essential employee dedicated to the safety and functionality of the roadway network. The role combines skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor to ensure roads remain clear and safe for travel. You will be a vital part of the crew, responding to both routine maintenance needs and critical emergency situations, including snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, and accident scene management.
Your work will involve operating light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform construction and maintenance tasks. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to emergency operations, where you will clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris while managing traffic control and detours in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Safety is paramount in this role. You will be responsible for identifying workplace hazards, implementing proper work site protection techniques, and maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Beyond equipment operation, you will perform manual labor tasks, utilize various hand and power tools, and conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure all machinery is ready for use.
Candidates must be prepared to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment. The role requires strict adherence to DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
VDOT employees are expected to abide by the VDOT Code of Ethics and the Commonwealth's Standards of Conduct. We value team members who can effectively communicate, follow oral and written instructions, and work collaboratively to complete assignments. A background in maintenance, vehicle operations, or related fields, along with experience in emergency operations and roadway construction, is highly desirable.
