About the Role
This position serves as an essential employee dedicated to the safety and functionality of our roadways. The role combines skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor to ensure efficient roadway maintenance and construction. You will be a vital part of the crew, responding to emergency situations such as snow and ice removal, storm clean-up, and accident debris clearance while maintaining traffic control standards.
Day in the Life
Your work involves operating light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks. You will conduct pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and utilize a variety of hand and power tools to complete assigned projects. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to ensuring work zone safety, including the installation and removal of traffic control devices in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
You will work collaboratively as a team member to accomplish objectives, interpreting work plans and sketches while maintaining accurate inventory and work documentation. Safety is paramount; you will be expected to identify hazards, adhere to OSHA and VDOT regulations, and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment at all times.
Hiring Process
Candidates must be prepared to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment. The role requires strict compliance with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
