The Elementary School Nurse serves as a vital health advocate for pupils, working primarily under the direction of the school Principal and receiving technical supervision from the Coordinator of Health Services. This role is dedicated to promoting healthy attitudes among students and staff while fostering a safe and healthy school environment. The position requires a professional manner and a positive attitude, as the nurse will maintain heavy contact with a diverse population of staff and students, handling all situations with tact and diplomacy.
As a key member of the school community, you will facilitate the implementation of Board of Education health policies and coordinate health education programs through individual consultations and classroom participation. Your day involves assessing and developing health care plans for students, including those requiring specialized services or medication administration, while ensuring compliance with state standards and Nurse Practice Act regulations. You will also lead health appraisal programs, such as vision and hearing screenings, and assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases by monitoring immunization status.
Collaboration is central to this role; you will work closely with administrators, teachers, and support staff to optimize the interaction between child health and education. Additionally, you will serve as a liaison between the school, parents, and external health care providers, assisting families in utilizing community health resources. In emergency situations, you are responsible for providing immediate care until lawful custodians assume responsibility, while maintaining accurate health records and preparing necessary reports.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Associate's degree in nursing from an accredited university and hold a current Registered Nurse License. A minimum of three years of nursing experience is required, with preferred qualifications including experience in pediatrics and with pediatric populations facing significant physical and mental health issues. The position is classified as Exempt under FLSA status.
