About the Team

Collegiate School is a co-educational, independent day school located in Henrico County, Virginia, serving nearly 1,700 students from Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade. For over a century, we have nurtured inquisitive thinkers, responsible citizens, and compassionate leaders. Our essence lies in the richness of relationships among students, faculty, parents, and alumni within a dynamic learning community that balances high personal and academic expectations.

The Middle School Counselor joins a dedicated administrative and student support team, reporting directly to the Head of the Middle School. This role is pivotal in building a healthy culture that cultivates student agency, inclusion, growth, discovery, and joy, while connecting deeply with Collegiate's "Portrait of a Graduate."

About the Role

As a Middle School Counselor, you will partner with faculty, families, and the broader JK-12 counseling team to support the holistic development of our students. This position is designed for a committed professional passionate about working with middle school-aged children, focusing on individualized counseling, social-emotional learning (SEL), and crisis response.

Your day will involve designing developmentally appropriate SEL curriculum, facilitating needs-based small groups, and leading parent workshops on child development and mental health. You will serve as a vital link between the school and community resources, ensuring continuity of care for students facing challenges. Additionally, you will guide students through critical transitions, such as moving from 4th to 5th grade and 8th to 9th grade, while supporting new students as they integrate into the Collegiate community. This is a full-time, 10-month position.

Our Values

Success in this role requires a demonstrated commitment to Collegiate's Core Values:

  • Honor: Personal integrity and devotion to the truth, making one trustworthy, forthright, responsible, and fair.
  • Love of Learning: A creative spirit that promotes intellectual and personal growth through exploration, inquiry, and openness to change.
  • Excellence: A sustained commitment to meeting high standards of character, achievement, and personal accountability.
  • Respect: Fundamental regard for the dignity and worth of each individual.
  • Community: A commitment to responsive and compassionate citizenship and service on campus, in the local community, and in the broader world.

Why Collegiate?

Collegiate is well-regarded for developing students into citizens who lead, serve, and shape the world. We offer a collaborative working environment where faculty and staff have opportunities to lead, serve, and shape the world through the young lives they touch. Employees benefit from excellent professional development opportunities, a rich benefits package, and an environment that fosters creative and innovative instruction.

Equal Opportunity

The School is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity for all employees and qualified applicants without regard to race, color, gender (including pregnancy), age, religion, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, veteran or military status, marital status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable law. Employment decisions at the School are based on merit, qualifications, and skills.
