This position is a vital component of the Indiana Department of Health Laboratory, specifically within the Antimicrobial Resistance Lab Network. The team operates at the forefront of public health defense, coordinating and performing comprehensive microbiological examinations to isolate and identify critical pathogens such as E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumanii, and Candida auris.
As an In-DOH Microbiologist II, you will serve as an independent expert in the assigned area, applying advanced analytical skills to solve complex public health challenges. Your work involves the full spectrum of microbiological analyses, including culture, biochemical tests, PCR, and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) of clinical specimens. Beyond routine testing, you will cross-train in molecular, viral, and serological techniques to ensure robust backup capacity for the laboratory.
The role demands a high degree of accuracy and judgment. You will evaluate and interpret laboratory results, develop new testing procedures, and compile epidemiological reports. While you will work independently to draw logical conclusions from intricate variables, you will also collaborate with the Laboratory Safety Officer, other state staff, and external entities like local health departments to implement work procedures and disseminate critical information.
Safety is the primary focus of this position, as you will be handling potentially dangerous specimens and biohazardous materials. The role requires strict adherence to safety standards, including the use of cumbersome personal protective equipment. You will work in a laboratory environment where equipment and space temperatures can fluctuate dramatically, requiring sustained concentration and a clear thought process to maintain precision during testing.
Candidates must possess extensive knowledge of microbiology principles, current scientific methods, and laboratory safety practices. Familiarity with state and federal regulations, particularly CLIA, is essential. This is a 6+ month contract position based in Marion County, Indianapolis, requiring a hybrid model of phone and in-person work.
