As a Microbiologist II specializing in Antimicrobial Resistance, you will serve as an independent expert within the Marion County public health laboratory. Your primary mission is to coordinate and execute the full spectrum of microbiological examinations, focusing on the isolation and identification of critical pathogens such as E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumanii, and Candida auris. This role is vital for addressing complex public health challenges through advanced molecular detection, sequencing, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) techniques.
You will work autonomously to analyze unusual specimens and develop new testing procedures, applying analytical judgment to draw accurate conclusions that directly impact community health and safety. While you will operate independently in your assigned area, you will also collaborate with the Laboratory Safety Officer, other state health staff, and external entities like local health departments to refine work procedures and disseminate critical information.
Your workday involves conducting high-complexity laboratory assays, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, MALDI-TOF, and WGS. You will strictly adhere to CLIA regulations for specimen handling, quality control, and documentation. A significant portion of your time is dedicated to evaluating and interpreting results, maintaining laboratory records, and preparing epidemiological or statistical reports.
The environment requires rigorous attention to safety standards, as you will handle potentially dangerous specimens and work with chemical or biohazard materials. You will often wear cumbersome personal protective equipment and may work in conditions where laboratory temperatures fluctuate, requiring sustained concentration and clear thinking. The role also offers the opportunity to cross-train in molecular, viral, and serological areas to support routine testing and provide backup capacity.
Candidates must be prepared to work Monday through Friday, 7.5 hours per day, with core hours from 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM. While the schedule is generally flexible with a one-hour lunch (potentially reduced to 30 minutes), weekends are not required. Applicants must confirm their acceptance of these scheduling requirements prior to proceeding.
We are committed to maintaining a safe and productive environment for all staff. This position requires adherence to strict safety protocols and the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both internal teams and the public. We value diverse perspectives in our pursuit of solutions to public health laboratory problems.
