This role is part of the Psychiatric Emergency Services (UPC) within the Behavioral and Mental Health department. The team operates in diverse environments, ranging from in-patient and residential settings to outreach locations such as homes, schools, and community agencies. The mission is to provide comprehensive care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients while maintaining a safe, secure, and therapeutic milieu that enhances treatment and educational effectiveness.
As a key member of the treatment team, you will provide direct patient care, education, and crisis intervention. Your day-to-day responsibilities involve assisting patients with activities of daily living, managing behavioral challenges, and participating in the development and implementation of treatment programs. You will serve as a vital liaison between the treatment team, families, law enforcement, and other departments, ensuring seamless communication and coordination.
The role requires active participation in the Crisis Response Team, responding to psychiatric emergencies and assisting staff with patients in crisis. You will also lead milieu activities, such as fitness groups and community meetings, and may act as a preceptor or trainer for other staff members. Maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols, including the use of least restrictive means and proper restraint administration when necessary, is central to ensuring patient and staff safety.
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent, along with UNMH Mental Health Tech Training and one year of directly related experience. Essential credentials include CPR for Healthcare/BLS (or Professional Rescuers) and Aggressive Behavior Certification, which must be obtained within 30 days of hire. A sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates.
We are committed to providing a safe and supportive work environment. This role involves significant physical demands and potential hazards, including risks associated with combative patients and exposure to biohazardous materials. We prioritize patient safety and encourage all team members to proactively identify and report potential risks, medical errors, or near misses. Professional growth is supported through participation in educational programs, in-services, and workshops.
