This position serves as a critical leadership point within a medium security facility, operating under general supervision to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff. The role is responsible for the overall security, custody, and control of inmates within assigned units, as well as the security of all buildings and public property.
Day-to-day operations involve conducting routine checks to ensure subordinate staff are performing duties safely and effectively, while maintaining cleanliness and OSHA standards. The incumbent acts as a key arbitrator, investigating complaints and violations, and resolving disputes between the inmate population and correctional staff. Accuracy in inmate counts is a primary responsibility.
Successful candidates must complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire. Additionally, new hires must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entering the position.
