Founded in 2017, the Lawyering Project is a legal advocacy organization that blends traditional impact litigation with movement lawyering to promote reproductive health, rights, and justice throughout the United States. Our mission is to eliminate laws that undermine reproductive health, rights, and justice, which deprive people of moral agency and compound other forms of oppression like racism, sexism, and poverty.
We operate three core legal programs: Litigation, which leverages the courts to eliminate barriers to reproductive health services; Access & Innovation, which provides legal advice and technical assistance to healthcare providers and abortion funds; and Pro Bono Initiatives, which operates the Abortion Defense Network to ensure access to high-quality, values-aligned lawyers for those threatened with liability in post-Roe America.
In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the Lawyering Project is committed to supporting all people seeking to obtain, provide, or facilitate abortion access while navigating new obstacles. We view this disruption of precedent as an opportunity to reshape reproductive rights jurisprudence on a stronger, more progressive foundation, working closely with partners in the reproductive health movement and the private bar to realize a more just and equitable future.
The Lawyering Project offers remote academic year internships for students seeking to satisfy academic or service requirements. Applications are considered on a rolling basis based on the quality of the application, staffing needs, and our capacity to provide adequate supervision. While we may not accept student placements every semester, we also consider funding for students who are not seeking to satisfy a school requirement.
This role is designed for individuals with strong research, writing, and analytical skills who can effectively manage multiple tasks and contribute to a positive, supportive work environment. Interns will gain practical experience in a variety of legal tasks, working within a collaborative team to advance our mission. A minimum commitment of 20 hours per week is required, with full-time (40 hours per week) interns preferred.
To be considered, your application must include the following materials:
Please note that the Summer Internship Program is a separate application with specific deadlines. If you are interested in a summer placement, please apply when the posting becomes available.
The Lawyering Project is an equal opportunity employer committed to building and maintaining an inclusive work environment that values individual differences. We believe that a team with varied perspectives and experiences will best enable our organization to thrive and achieve its mission. We welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences, identities, and backgrounds to apply.
We do not discriminate against applicants or employees based on race, religion, sex, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, or any other classification protected by law. We are committed to providing reasonable accommodation for pregnant people and qualified individuals with disabilities, including in the application process. The Lawyering Project operates within the law practice industry, based in Brooklyn, New York. The organization focuses on addressing legal frameworks that negatively impact reproductive health, rights, and justice. These laws are identified as undermining moral agency and compounding systemic oppression related to racism, sexism, and poverty. The group works to eliminate statutes that restrict access to or affordability of abortion care, create disparities in health outcomes, reinforce gender stereotypes, or discriminate against individuals based on their reproductive choices.
The mission centers on establishing a legal environment where people can make personal decisions regarding sex, pregnancy, family, and healthcare aligned with their own beliefs and values. The organization ensures that resources are available to support these individual choices. By targeting specific areas of legal discrimination, the Lawyering Project aims to foster a system that protects bodily autonomy and reduces the harmful effects of restrictive legislation on vulnerable populations.
