An OB/GYN Laborist is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist dedicated to providing inpatient care for women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. Unlike traditional OB/GYNs who manage both outpatient and inpatient duties, laborists work exclusively in hospital settings. This specialized focus allows them to offer 24/7 coverage, ensuring that timely and safe obstetric care is available around the clock.
The laborist model addresses the critical need for consistent, high-quality care in labor and delivery units. By covering for community OB/GYNs who are unavailable during their patients' labor and managing unassigned patients or those without a designated obstetrician, laborists ensure that no woman is left without expert attention. They serve as the backbone of the labor and delivery team, responding to emergencies and maintaining safety standards through evidence-based protocols.
A typical day involves managing a dynamic mix of clinical responsibilities. You will perform obstetric triage evaluations, manage labor progression, and oversee deliveries, including both vaginal and cesarean sections. The role requires close collaboration with nursing staff, midwives, and other physicians to coordinate care seamlessly. Beyond direct patient care, you will participate in quality improvement initiatives to refine labor and delivery protocols and may be called upon to educate residents, medical students, and nursing staff.
Candidates must hold a valid state medical license and DEA registration. The selection process prioritizes board certification or eligibility in Obstetrics and Gynecology, along with the completion of a 4-year OB/GYN residency program. Advanced training in high-risk obstetrics or maternal-fetal medicine is considered a valuable addition to the candidate profile.
We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where all qualified applicants are considered regardless of background.
