Laboratory Assistant - Pre-Analytics - Per Diem 8 Hour Rotating Shift (Non-Exempt) (Union)

About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant serves as the department's primary support system, ensuring the integrity of patient care through the meticulous handling of biological specimens. This role is critical to the laboratory's workflow, bridging clinical needs with operational efficiency. You will be responsible for procuring blood samples, preserving specimen quality, and managing the transport, processing, and preparation of all samples. Beyond clinical duties, the position includes essential clerical functions such as answering telephone inquiries, disseminating laboratory reports, and communicating with referral laboratories.

Day in the Life

Your day will involve obtaining blood samples via venipuncture or capillary methods, tailored to the specific needs and ages of patients. You will screen incoming specimens against established guidelines to ensure acceptability and deliver blood products to Surgery while transporting surgical specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections. The role requires processing, distributing, and packaging specimens (excluding Anatomic Pathology samples) and serving as the primary point of contact for inquiries regarding lab results and specimen status.

Effective communication is central to this position. You will interact professionally with patients, co-workers, and guests, maintaining a high standard of service while adhering to all hospital and departmental policies. You will also actively participate in the Department's Quality Improvement program to support ongoing professional growth and development.

Hiring Process

Applicants must hold a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential issued by the California Department of Public Health. Additionally, Fire Life Safety Training is required for positions within Los Angeles City; if not obtained prior to hire, it must be completed within 30 days.
