Founded in 1895, Union Settlement is an East Harlem-based nonprofit organization and a pioneer of the settlement house movement. For over 128 years, we have provided critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. Today, our dynamic workforce of more than 350 employees serves over 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses annually through 33 program sites across 28 locations.
As a connector, convener, and advocate for East Harlem, we empower New Yorkers to gain opportunities, develop skills, and achieve their dreams. Our work spans eight core program areas, including Early Childhood Education, Youth Services, Family Services, Adult Education, Mental Health Services, and Aging, Health, & Wellness Services.
The Kitchen Manager is a vital leader within the Aging, Health, & Wellness Services department, ensuring the safe, nutritious, and efficient delivery of meals to our senior community. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Aging, Health & Wellness Services, this role is the operational heart of our food service programs, overseeing the Jefferson Senior Center and satellite sites.
In this position, you will manage the full lifecycle of meal production, from quarterly menu planning and food purchasing to daily preparation, portioning, and packaging for Meals on Wheels and congregate lunches. You will lead a team of kitchen staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes food safety, DFTA compliance, and high-quality service. Your day-to-day involves supervising batch-cooking techniques, maintaining rigorous inventory and temperature controls, and ensuring the kitchen and dining areas remain clean and welcoming. Beyond the kitchen, you will serve as the primary liaison with food vendors and collaborate closely with the Meals on Wheels Director on emergency planning.
Interested candidates should submit their application via our careers portal. The selection process typically includes a review of qualifications, followed by an interview with the Deputy Director and relevant department leadership. We are committed to finding the right fit for our team and our community.
