A critical component of the job is coordinating the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. This ensures compliance with the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to effectively warn motorists. The role also includes assisting in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may involve operating medium or heavy-duty equipment.
This position requires working frequently in the outside environment under all weather conditions, with daily exposure to noise and oil or grease. The work involves walking for extended periods and treading rough, uneven terrain, often in close proximity to moving traffic and natural environmental hazards.\n The schedule may include extended working hours, 12-hour shifts, overtime, nighttime work, and weekends, particularly during hazardous weather or departmental emergencies.
