The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Division of Operations is dedicated to keeping the state's highways safe and drivable for the traveling public. We value innovation, teamwork, and a workforce that supports both professional excellence and family life. Our mission is to maintain critical infrastructure through a culture of safety and public awareness.
As a Highway Maintenance Worker, you will serve as a vital member of a crew responsible for the upkeep of state highways. Your work ensures that roads remain safe under all conditions, from routine maintenance to emergency response. This role is dynamic and physically active, requiring you to work outdoors in all weather conditions and alongside highway traffic.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include performing roadway and roadside maintenance, installing and replacing signs and pavement markings, and maintaining guardrail systems. You will also handle structure repairs, winter maintenance, and equipment upkeep. During emergencies or inclement weather, you may be called upon to provide temporary traffic control, respond to incidents, and work night or weekend shifts to ensure public safety.
The schedule adapts to the seasons: from May to September, you will work 10-hour days, four days a week (Monday through Thursday). From October to April, the schedule shifts to eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the state's infrastructure while enjoying a benefits package designed to support your well-being and family.

Applicants will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow-up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing. Pursuant to state law, you will be required to authorize the Department to obtain a complete driving record. Applicants living outside of South Dakota may be asked to provide a motor vehicle record from their state of residence.
