The Head Swim Coach at Hedgesville High leads the administration and development of the school's swimming program. This role serves as the primary liaison between the athletic department, students, parents, and the broader community, fostering a culture of sportsmanship, academic excellence, and athletic growth.
The position is accountable to the Principal and Athletic Director. The Head Coach is responsible for shaping team philosophies, managing equipment and facilities, and overseeing the safety and well-being of all athletes. Beyond the pool deck, the role involves developing off-season strength and conditioning programs, monitoring player academic progress, and managing program budgets in collaboration with school administration.
Candidates must possess or be eligible for West Virginia Teacher Certification, or have the ability to obtain WV Coaching Authorization prior to the start of the season (High School Diploma or GED required). Successful completion of a three-day ASEP / WVSSAC certification training class, including three online exams, followed by four NFHS / WVSSAC online courses with exams, and required Safeschools trainings is mandatory.
Applicants must have appropriate grade-level athletic coaching experience within the last five years. Additionally, candidates must have prior approval and recommendation from school administrators. Applicants dismissed or non-renewed for cause by another district, those with recent unsatisfactory evaluations, or those with unfavorable reference recommendations are not eligible for consideration.
A core function of this role is developing positive relationships with players, parents, students, faculty, officials, media, and the community. The Head Swim Coach actively participates in the school's Sportsmanship Program and Scholar/Athlete Program, ensuring adherence to all WVSSAC rules and regulations.
The position requires the ability to meet multiple demands from various stakeholders while interacting with the public and staff. Essential functions include reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and using technology. The role may require lifting and moving at least 10 pounds of materials and possessing specific vision abilities to read handwritten or typed material and adjust focus.
Pay is based on the approved BCS Coaching Stipend Schedule.
