The Head Custodian serves as a vital leader within Harrisonburg City Public Schools, responsible for the routine maintenance and overall appearance of the school building. This role ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing both routine and non-routine cleaning tasks in assigned areas.
In this position, you will provide leadership to other building custodians while working under limited supervision. Your day involves managing a variety of tasks, from trash removal and floor care to minor maintenance like replacing light bulbs and clearing snow. You will also respond promptly to safety hazards, set up facilities for meetings, and ensure the functional operation of critical building systems such as HVAC and refrigeration units.
Beyond physical maintenance, the Head Custodian acts as a role model, maintaining professional boundaries with students and fostering a culture of equity and inclusion. You will interact daily with a diverse community of staff, parents, and students, requiring strong communication skills and a commitment to safety protocols.
