About the Role
The Head Custodian serves as a vital leader within Harrisonburg City Public Schools, responsible for the routine maintenance and overall appearance of the school building. This role ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing both routine and non-routine cleaning tasks in assigned areas.
In this position, you will provide leadership to other building custodians while working under limited supervision. Your day involves managing a variety of tasks, from trash removal and floor care to minor maintenance like replacing light bulbs and clearing snow. You will also respond promptly to safety hazards, set up facilities for meetings, and ensure the functional operation of critical building systems such as HVAC and refrigeration units.
Beyond physical maintenance, the Head Custodian acts as a role model, maintaining professional boundaries with students and fostering a culture of equity and inclusion. You will interact daily with a diverse community of staff, parents, and students, requiring strong communication skills and a commitment to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

- check_circlePerform routine and non-routine cleaning tasks including trash removal, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming
- check_circleRefinish resilient floor tile and maintain carpets through stripping, sealing, buffing, and shampooing
- check_circleManage building grounds by mowing grass, trimming shrubbery, and removing snow or ice
- check_circleOpen and secure the building to protect against vandalism and theft as requested by supervisors
- check_circleSet up for meetings and class functions, move furniture, and store deliveries as needed
- check_circleProvide leadership to other custodians and coordinate work schedules to meet weekly deadlines
- check_circlePerform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, cleaning filters, and basic plumbing repairs
- check_circleRespond promptly to safety hazards, spills, and student illnesses while reporting accidents to administration
- check_circleSanitize restrooms, drinking fountains, glass, mirrors, and fixtures to ensure proper building sanitation
- check_circleMonitor equipment functionality and contact maintenance staff for necessary repairs
