The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is dedicated to protecting, maintaining, and improving Alaska's fisheries resources. Guided by the Anadromous Fish Act, the Division conducts annual inventories of water bodies to identify those critical for the spawning, rearing, and migration of anadromous fish. The Alaska Freshwater Fish Inventory (AFFI) program is a unique statewide project tasked with conducting these annual surveys in priority regions to populate the AFFI database and generate nominations for the Anadromous Waters Catalog.

This position is a Habitat Biologist 1 role stationed in Anchorage, open exclusively to Alaska residents. You will join a small team conducting remote fieldwork to sample Alaska's freshwater streams and lakes. As a crew leader, you will direct field crews in collecting fish, stream, and riparian habitat data while managing essential aspects of the AFFI project, including procurement, logistics planning, electrofishing, fish identification, data management, analysis, and equipment maintenance.
The role offers the opportunity to participate in all aspects of planning and executing a yearly field project. While based in Anchorage for office work and gear storage, the project operates statewide. Field work may involve travel across Alaska, exposure to inclement weather, insects, and animals, as well as low-level flying in planes and helicopters, and travel by boat or skiff. Housing during field assignments may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents, often requiring shared rooms with crew members. The position is typically funded for a minimum of 10 months annually (March–December) and requires the ability to travel for at least 25 consecutive days each summer.
