About the Team

CMU Enterprise Space Information Management (ESIM) is dedicated to supporting campus mapping, geospatial data management, and operational planning initiatives. The team ensures that geospatial tools and spatial analysis drive real-world projects related to campus operations, emergency planning, and environmental safety.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We seek team members who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity, sharing our values and supporting the university's mission through their work.

About the Role

This paid GIS internship offers motivated students hands-on experience applying GIS tools to a campus operational environment. You will assist in maintaining and improving GIS datasets, supporting web maps and map products, and organizing imagery and related geospatial data. The role involves contributing to focused summer projects that support ESIM and partner departments, ranging from data cleanup and quality control to field verification and the collection of GPS or drone-related data.

As an intern, you will apply basic cartographic standards and help document workflows to create reusable GIS reference materials. A key component of the role is contributing to a defined summer GIS project, culminating in a presentation of your final work product(s) to the team.

Learning Opportunities

This internship is designed to help you:

  • Gain practical GIS experience in a campus operational environment.
  • Work on meaningful geospatial projects that support safety, planning, and emergency preparedness.
  • Develop skills in data management, web mapping, cartography, and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with ESIM and potentially other campus partners on applied GIS initiatives.
