Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) at Union Terminal is a national historic landmark dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to learn more about the world through science, regional history, and engaging experiences. Recognized by Forbes Traveler Magazine as the 17th most visited museum in the country, CMC welcomes over 1.4 million visits annually. The institution houses the Cincinnati History Museum, Children's Museum, Museum of Natural History & Science, the Robert D. Lindner Family OMNIMAX® Theater, and the Cincinnati History Library & Archives. CMC was awarded the 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Service and received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 2012.
CMC is committed to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. We acknowledge how we are alike and embrace how we are different. When we work with empathy and equity, we can build a better community together. We seek candidates from all communities, including People of Color, Tribal citizens, recent immigrants, and others interested in telling the rich stories of Greater Cincinnati's people, past and present.
The George Rieveschl Curator, Archaeology leads the Museum's archaeology and ethnology departments, stewarding and building collections in accordance with CMC's policies and professional standards. This role is pivotal in directing research efforts, conducting archaeological excavations and surveys, and overseeing the Museum's NAGPRA program. The Curator acts as a vital resource for the Learning and Exhibits teams, advising on key themes and collection connections while helping to create and revise permanent and temporary exhibitions.
A major focus of this position is guiding the strategic move of approximately 3,000,000 items and resources in the Archaeology & Ethnology collections to the new Vontz Family Center for Research, Education & Collections. The Curator will also help build, deepen, and steward relationships with Tribal, community, and academic partners, specifically considering how to bring forward marginalized narratives and broaden perspectives on Ohio Valley history. As a member of a strong team of historians, scientists, and archivists, the Curator will supervise the Manager of NAGPRA/Tribal Liaison, interns, and volunteers, while collaborating with colleagues across the Museum to support fundraising and revenue-generating activities.
Candidates are invited to apply through the Cincinnati Museum Center career portal. The selection process typically involves a review of qualifications, followed by interviews with the hiring committee and potential team members. We value diverse perspectives and encourage applicants to share how their background aligns with our mission of inclusive storytelling.
