This position serves as a vital link within the County and City's foster care system, dedicated to supporting and assisting residents through complex case management. Reporting to a Family Services Supervisor, the Family Services Specialist III plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children in foster care. The role distinguishes itself by focusing on direct service delivery and case execution, distinct from the lead or expert resource functions of higher-level classes.
The day-to-day work involves a dynamic blend of field work, legal advocacy, and community coordination. You will conduct comprehensive assessments, place and monitor children in foster homes, and facilitate the development of independent living skills for youth. A significant portion of the role is dedicated to legal proceedings, where you may be required to testify, as well as leading treatment team and family partnership meetings to craft effective case plans. The position also encompasses the sensitive work of recruiting and preparing families for adoption, ensuring a permanent home for waiting children, while managing the associated financial and administrative requirements.
Applications for this position must be submitted electronically through the official website. Mailed, emailed, faxed, or hand-delivered applications and resumes will not be accepted. To be considered for an interview, your application must include a complete work history and a resume; consideration is based solely on the information provided in these documents.
All offers are contingent upon satisfactory results from a comprehensive background investigation. This process may include State Police and FBI checks, Central Registry searches, local agency checks, employment and education verification, credit checks (where relevant), and pre-employment drug screening. Additionally, candidates must possess a valid driver's license and meet agency driving record requirements to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Employees must also be willing to work in community emergency shelters during natural disasters or emergencies.
