Expert Innovation Strategy Engineer

Department Overview

Electric Transmission & Distribution ensures the delivery of clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. The team is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and operations of PG&E's 100,000 miles of distribution lines and over 18,000 miles of transmission lines. Comprising approximately 6,500 coworkers, the department actively engages in Lean Methodology through visual management in operating reviews to cross-functionally identify and solve problems. By working together as "One Electric. One Team," the group delivers for its hometowns.

About the Role

This position serves as a strategic partner within a small team dedicated to driving structured innovation and breakthrough thinking at PG&E. The team's mandate is to build PG&E's internal capacity for structured innovation, transforming it from a peripheral experiment into a repeatable, embedded organizational capability. The scope spans corporate innovation methodology, strategic foresight, portfolio thinking, and measurement.

You will provide engineering, testing, and analysis services across multiple disciplines to identify, diagnose, and solve complex technical problems. Beyond immediate problem-solving, the role involves proactively consulting with clients to prevent future issues. You will conduct inspections, failure analyses, and performance assessments on a wide variety of systems and components. A key aspect of this role is the ability to think systematically about complex, uncertain problems and communicate findings with clarity and authority. You will also partner with management to create bid proposals and lead projects that deliver high financial impact to PG&E and its clients.

Work Environment

This position is hybrid, requiring work from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The role is based in Danville or San Ramon. Travel is required, with frequency depending on the specific assignment (10% - 75%).

The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
