The Floorhand is a vital member of the drilling rig team, responsible for safely and efficiently providing the manual labor required to operate equipment on the rig floor. Working under the close supervision of the Driller, this role is essential for the day-to-day assembly and disassembly of drilling pipe and collars using tongs and drilling slips.
The position involves a dynamic mix of physical tasks, including operating hoists to raise and lower equipment and personnel, as well as utilizing hand tools, sledgehammers, and large pipe wrenches for maintenance and repairs. Floorhands actively participate in repairing, maintaining, and cleaning rig equipment, which may involve chipping, painting, mixing chemicals, and the greasing, oiling, and washing of equipment, walls, and floors.
Safety is a core component of the role. Every team member holds the responsibility, authority, and obligation to interrupt an operation if a condition or behavior is observed that could cause harm to people, assets, or the environment. Floorhands are expected to identify hazards, report incidents and equipment failures according to company procedures, and participate in pre-tour and pre-task meetings. Additionally, the role includes mentoring new Floorhands as they are assigned to the rig.
