Founded in 1836, Alfred University is the second oldest coeducational college in the United States. Built on principles of social justice and a commitment to education for all citizens, the University has evolved into a leader in independent thinking, creativity, and academic rigor. Today, Alfred University serves nearly 2,000 students on a 232-acre campus in Western New York, focusing on a professional education with an emphasis on APEX (applied and experiential learning program). The institution remains responsive to contemporary society while honoring its origins as one of the earliest colleges to enroll African American and Native American students.
This position serves as a vital support pillar for the Alfred University equestrian program, ensuring the facility and equipment operate with optimum efficiency and economy. The role is designed for a self-starter who can work independently to maintain the equestrian center in accordance with university goals. You will be the primary point of contact for the physical upkeep of the barn, arenas, and farm machinery, working closely with the Director of Equestrian Program and the Barn Manager.
Your day will involve a blend of hands-on maintenance and supervisory duties. You will manage the maintenance shop, oversee student workers and barn assistants, and ensure the facility meets high standards of health and safety for the horse herd, staff, and students. The environment is physically active and may include high dust conditions, outdoor elements, and the need to handle ill, injured, or unruly horses. Success in this role requires the agility and strength to manage heavy equipment and the ability to work in all weather conditions on a campus with hills and slopes.
Interested candidates should submit their application through the Alfred University career portal. The selection process typically involves a review of qualifications followed by an interview with the hiring team to assess technical skills, experience with farm operations, and fit within the university community.
