As a Driver Trainee, you will learn the essential functions of the Driver job, including the accurate and timely distribution of products to various customer locations. You will gain exposure to warehouse and other operational functions as part of the developmental process of becoming a McLane Driver.
McLane is offering a fully paid CDL-A School right here in Northfield, MN. This program provides a clear path to becoming a professional driver with a minimum guarantee of $65,000 per year and average first-year earnings ranging from $80,000 to $90,000.
The training schedule runs Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with on-site classes in Northfield lasting four weeks. While in school and training, you will earn $23.50 per hour. A key requirement is obtaining a CDL-A Permit prior to the start of the class. Upon completion, you will receive your Class A CDL within six months or less.
As a Driver Trainee, you will train side-by-side with an experienced Driver Trainer to acquire the skills necessary to perform essential job functions. Your day will involve maneuvering tractors into position to attach trailers, securing lines, and operating the truck in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
You will inspect tractor-trailer equipment for defects before and after trips, submitting DOT inspection reports to ensure the condition of the vehicle. Using the Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH), you will document delivery receipts, product temperatures, and any exceptions, while also inspecting trailers to ensure product is secure for undamaged transport.
A significant portion of your training involves riding with your Driver Trainer to various destinations. During these trips, you will gain knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observe the Driver's skill in starting the engine, approaching intersections, making turns, backing, parking, and maneuvering the vehicle on the road and on customer premises. You will also assist the Driver in unloading the trailer and delivering products into customer premises, maintaining driver logs according to DOT regulations.
The environment encompasses all areas of a distribution center, transportation department, shop, and customer facilities. Working conditions may include moderate noise, vehicle vibration, and extreme weather conditions depending on the climate. The role requires regular and frequent travel, including overnight trips. You must be willing to select, load, unload, and deliver all products that may be ordered by McLane customers.
