The Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) serves as the primary interface between the State and local communities. While all state governments provide similar services through various structures, Colorado's approach is unique in gathering these local community services into one Department of "Local Affairs." This central focus is dedicated to strengthening Colorado communities and enhancing livability.
Our mission is to help strengthen Colorado's communities through accessible, affordable, and secure housing; implementing property tax law; capacity building; strategic training, research, and technical assistance; and funding to localities. The work we do matters greatly to us and to the citizens of the great state of Colorado. We are passionate about supporting our communities and value the diversity that Colorado offers.
The State Demography Office (SDO) is a nonpartisan state office within DOLA designated by statute as the primary state agency of demographic information. We acquire, develop, analyze, and disseminate demographic, housing, economic, and related information for Colorado and its sub-areas. The SDO serves as a crucial support to decision-makers, including the Governor, the Legislature, State agencies, local governments, and universities, providing critical data and projections that inform long-term planning and strategic initiatives.
As the State Demographer, you will be the head of the State Demography Office and the leading authority on population data and the causes of population change for the State of Colorado. Your work will shape the future of our communities by designing programs, directing staff, and determining resource allocation for statutorily required population estimates and forecasts. You will collaborate with decision-makers to provide expert analysis on demographic trends, ensuring that small differences in population data translate into accurate expenditures for state agencies such as Education, Higher Education, Corrections, Public Health, Human Services, and Transportation.
Additionally, the SDO serves as Colorado's State Census Data Center. In this capacity, you will act as the lead for the State Data Center, engaging in data mapping and planning for the U.S. Census. You will serve as the primary contact for state-level decennial census efforts, collaborating with the Census Bureau and local communities to ensure accurate counts and timely information delivery.
If your goal is to build a career that makes a difference in communities across the State, consider joining the dedicated people of the Department of Local Affairs. We offer a great location and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental plans, strong retirement plans (PERA Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution), employee wellness programs, and flexible work schedule options. We also provide paid life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage, and opportunities for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
This opportunity is only open to residents of the State of Colorado. Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States. Under the Job Application Fairness Act, applicants may redact information from certifications and transcripts that identify their age, date of birth, or dates of attendance from an educational institution.
To apply, you must upload unofficial college transcripts that include the student name, college name, courses completed, and/or degree with date conferred. Ensure that the "Work Experience" section of the application is complete and contains all relevant work experience related to the position.
The Colorado Department of Local Affairs is an equal opportunity employer. We value the diversity that Colorado offers and are committed to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
