About the Role
Mercy is seeking a Director, Health Information Management to lead our Health Information Management and Privacy functions within the IT & Data Management department. This role oversees health information governance, privacy compliance (including HIPAA), data integrity, and records management across Mercy's Midwest facilities.
The Director will collaborate with clinical, operational, and technology leaders to optimize EMR use, support analytics, and safeguard patient data. You will serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to executive and operational leaders, championing Mercy's mission and values by modeling ethical handling of patient information and promoting a culture of confidentiality and respect.

Key Responsibilities
- check_circleProvide strategic and operational leadership for enterprise health information management and privacy programs
- check_circleOversee HIM functions including medical record integrity, release of information, and record retention
- check_circleEnsure organizational compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and applicable state and federal privacy regulations
- check_circleDevelop and maintain privacy and HIM policies, procedures, and standards for PHI access and disclosure
- check_circleLead privacy risk assessments, audits, and coordinate investigations of privacy incidents and breaches
- check_circlePartner with IT and clinical leaders to optimize EHR systems for documentation quality and privacy-by-design
- check_circleCollaborate with Compliance, Legal, and Information Security on regulatory interpretation and risk mitigation
- check_circleDesign and deliver organization-wide training programs on HIM and privacy requirements for PHI handling
- check_circleSupport data governance initiatives by advising on data classification, retention, and access control frameworks
- check_circleDevelop and track key performance indicators to report on HIM and privacy program effectiveness
- check_circleLead, mentor, and develop HIM and privacy staff to foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement

Requirements
- verifiedRegistered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) strongly preferred
- verifiedCertified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) strongly preferred
- verifiedCertified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or similar preferred
- verifiedProject Management Professional (PMP) or comparable preferred
- verifiedExperience with major EHR platforms (e.g., Epic, Cerner)
- verifiedDemonstrated knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and related federal and state privacy regulations
Nice to Have
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification. Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) certification. Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or similar compliance credential. Project Management Professional (PMP) or comparable project/program management certification. Experience with major EHR platforms (e.g., Epic, Cerner). Demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and related federal and state privacy regulations.
