About the Virginia Zoo

The Virginia Zoo is a premier destination for conservation, education, and community engagement. Our mission is to inspire people to care for the natural world through immersive experiences and meaningful connections with animals. As we continue to grow our impact, our fundraising efforts are vital to sustaining our operations, expanding our conservation programs, and ensuring the Zoo remains a beacon of hope for wildlife and the community.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Director of Advancement, the Development Manager serves as a strategic leader within our Advancement team. This role is designed to drive measurable and sustainable growth in the Zoo's fundraising capabilities. You will be the operational backbone of our development department, directly supervising the Development Specialist and collaborating closely to ensure the integrity and effective use of our donor database and systems.

In this position, you will lead the strategy and execution of our annual and restricted giving initiatives. Your day-to-day involves overseeing the acquisition and renewal of donors, managing online and crowd-sourced fundraising campaigns, and cultivating strong relationships with volunteers and board members. You will work at the intersection of data and storytelling, using insights to refine our donor stewardship communications and ensure every interaction strengthens the bond between the Zoo and its supporters. By driving efficiency and accountability, you will help the Senior Director implement broader fundraising strategies that secure the Zoo's future.

The Hiring Process

We are committed to finding the right fit for our team. The interview process typically includes:

  1. Initial Screening: A brief conversation with HR to discuss your background and interest in the role.
  2. Team Interview: A deeper dive with the Senior Director of Advancement and the Development Specialist to discuss strategy and operational fit.
  3. Final Interview: A meeting with senior leadership to align on vision and culture.

Join Our Team

We believe that diversity and inclusion are essential to our success. The Virginia Zoo is an equal opportunity employer and values the unique perspectives that individuals from all backgrounds bring to our mission. We are dedicated to fostering a culture where every team member feels respected, supported, and empowered to make a difference.

If you are passionate about conservation and ready to lead a dynamic development team, we invite you to apply.
