About the Role
The Custodian 1 serves as a vital partner to the custodial team, dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. This role goes beyond routine cleaning; it involves ensuring the building is ready for daily activities, managing energy efficiency, and responding to the dynamic needs of the school community.
You will be the first line of defense in maintaining the physical integrity of the campus, from sweeping hallways and servicing restrooms to managing specialized tasks like floor waxing and graffiti removal. As a key member of the team, you may also assist in supervising and training part-time or temporary staff, fostering a collaborative atmosphere where everyone contributes to a positive school culture.
Day in the Life
Your day is a mix of scheduled maintenance and responsive problem-solving. You will start by ensuring assigned areas are dusted, floors are swept, and supplies are stocked. Throughout the day, you will respond to requests from staff, such as setting up audio-visual equipment for meetings or classrooms. You will also handle weekly deep-cleaning tasks, including buffing floors and washing walls, while keeping an eye on energy management protocols.
Safety and security are paramount. You will regularly check windows, doors, and lights, and if you are the sole custodian on the second shift, you will be responsible for securing the entire building. You will also interact with a diverse population of students, staff, and visitors, requiring tact, diplomacy, and a professional demeanor at all times.
