As a Custodian 1, you play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students and staff. You will assist the custodial team in performing a variety of tasks across the building or campus, ensuring that all areas are well-maintained and ready for daily use.
This position involves a mix of daily and weekly duties, ranging from dusting surfaces and emptying wastebaskets to more specialized tasks like floor buffing, waxing, and graffiti removal. You will also support the school community by responding to office requests, setting up audio-visual equipment, and managing energy functions. In some cases, you may assist in supervising and training part-time or temporary staff.
Your day will be dynamic, requiring you to move between various areas of the school, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, gyms, and auditoriums. You will use a range of equipment, from standard hand tools like brooms and mops to power machines for floor care and snow removal. Additionally, you may interact with SMART boards and iPads as part of your duties.
You will work under the direct supervision of the Building Custodial Supervisor, collaborating with colleagues and responding to the needs of a diverse population. The role demands a professional manner, a positive attitude, and the ability to prioritize tasks to meet daily demands. You will also be responsible for securing the building by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving, and responding appropriately to any emergencies that arise.
While a high school diploma or GED is preferred, the most important qualities are a commitment to professionalism, a positive attitude, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You should possess good judgment, the ability to communicate clearly, and a willingness to learn about mechanical operations and safety guidelines.
