About the Role

As a Registered Nurse within our Heart and Vascular or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care according to unit policies and procedures. You will work under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator, providing high-level care to adult patients with complex cardiac, medical, and surgical diagnoses.

In this fast-paced, high-acuity environment, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to manage patients recovering from procedures such as CABG, valve replacements, aortic dissection repairs, and heart transplants. You may also care for patients requiring advanced mechanical circulatory support, including ECMO, LVADs, Impella catheters, and intra-aortic balloon pumps. When assuming the charge role, you will delegate and supervise unit activities, ensuring the smooth operation of the department.

Our Units

Heart and Vascular Cardiac ICU (5-1 SP) A 14-bed critical care unit caring for adult patients with complex cardiac and medical diagnoses, including myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, unstable arrhythmias, and heart failure. Our staff is trained in advanced heart failure management and evaluation for advanced therapies and transplantation.

RN-HVC Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU/WP3) An 18-bed cardiac surgery unit specializing in complex post-operative care. This is the only unit in the YNHH health system that cares for patients requiring ECMO (VV or VA bypass). Nurses are trained on specific devices based on experience and skill progression.

HVC Cardiovascular ICU and Stepdown (5-4 SP) A 14-bed hybrid unit with 8 ICU and 6 stepdown beds. We specialize in caring for patients post-complex vascular surgery and post-cardiac surgery in the ICU, while the stepdown beds support patients with a variety of complex heart and vascular diagnoses.

Hiring Process

Candidates are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program. All newly hired registered nurses must hold current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.
