As a Correctional Officer with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, you will play a critical role in maintaining the security, control, and custody of inmates within a state adult correctional facility. This position is essential to ensuring the safety of staff, the public, and the incarcerated population while upholding institutional order and discipline.
The role involves a dynamic day-to-day environment where you will supervise inmates across various settings, including cell houses, yards, work crews, and recreation areas. You will be responsible for patrolling assigned posts, conducting inmate counts, performing searches for contraband, and managing inmate conduct. In emergency situations, such as riots or fires, you will respond as part of specialized teams to maintain safety and control.
Selected candidates must be willing to attend an intensive 8-week live-in academy in Oklahoma City, running from Sunday at 6:00 PM through Thursday at 6:00 PM, with weekends reserved for travel home. The academy begins on August 3, 2026. During this period, lodging and meals are provided at no cost to the employee. Prior to the academy, you will work at your selected facility under the guidance of a Field Training Officer.
This job family offers a clear path for advancement. The Correctional Officer level serves as the entry point, involving formal and on-the-job training in security duties, policies, and procedures. Upon completing statutory training and orientation, officers assume full responsibilities for routine security and custody. The Corporal level represents the career tier, where employees perform at a full capacity level, interpreting and executing post orders to maintain discipline and security both within and outside the facility.
This is a full-time, on-site position. Employees must be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week, including additional shifts as required. The role is designated as safety-sensitive, and employees may be certified as peace officers, requiring proficiency in firearms, self-defense tactics, and conflict management.
