About the Role
We are seeking an experienced lawyer to handle regulatory matters involving electric transmission. This role represents the Company before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and various administrative agencies, including the Montana Public Service Commission. The position offers independence and responsibility, supported by a dynamic legal team.
You will build relationships within our expansive company while developing a wide variety of cases. This role offers significant professional growth potential, including opportunities to receive and supply mentoring. While extensive knowledge in energy law is beneficial, it can be learned provided the successful candidate possesses litigation and/or administrative law experience with an interest in transaction work, including electric transaction planning.

- check_circleDraft legal documents including contracts, compliance filings, tariff provisions, pleadings, motions, briefs, and memos
- check_circleConduct legal research and develop assessments, recommendations, and opinions on regulatory issues
- check_circleDraft comments on proposed rulemakings and non-contested case dockets before regulatory agencies
- check_circleParticipate in civil disputes and legal work outside the regulatory arena
- check_circleRepresent the company in court and out of court on civil matters or judicial review of agency decisions
- check_circleAdvise internal clients on state and federal regulatory issues, contract interpretation, and legal matters
- check_circleEnsure all actions align with company values, mission, and strategic business objectives
- check_circleRepresent NorthWestern Energy before FERC, Montana PSC, and other administrative agencies in regulatory dockets

Requirements
- verifiedMember of State Bar of Montana or ability to be admitted on motion or pass Montana Bar exam
- verifiedAt least five years of legal experience in corporate legal department, law firm, or regulatory agency
- verifiedProficient user of Microsoft Outlook and Word
- verifiedExperience with SharePoint, Excel, and PowerPoint (preferred)
- verifiedEnergy Industry Fundamental 2.0 certification (preferred)
- verifiedDrug test required

Nice to Have
Experience in reviewing and/or drafting contracts dealing with technical subject matters. First chair experience in administrative or litigation cases. Some knowledge of electric and natural gas industries, including general rate case matters, electric transmission issues, and Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act (PURPA) related issues. Experience with SharePoint, Excel, and PowerPoint. Get Into Energy - Energy Industry Fundamental 2.0 certification.
