The Communications Specialist serves as the critical first point of contact for the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, operating the emergency services systems and communication devices that receive, route, and dispatch calls for law enforcement and other public safety services. This position is vital to the county's mission of public service, requiring individuals who can maintain composure in high-stress environments while delivering exceptional customer service to the community.
As a member of the Sheriff's Office team, you will work within a collaborative, fast-paced environment where attention to detail and the ability to multitask are essential. The role demands a professional who can assimilate quickly into the organizational climate, establish critical relationships, and take ownership of problems to find effective solutions. Whether handling emergency or non-emergency calls, you will be the voice of the department, ensuring that resources are shared efficiently and that the County's goals are met.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide recruitment to fill a current full-time vacancy. The eligibility list established from this process may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
Step 1: Application Screening After your application is submitted, it will be screened to determine if you meet the minimum requirements. If you do not meet the qualifications, you have one business day to file an appeal. Successful applicants will receive an email invitation to take the Communications Specialist online exam.
Step 2: Online Examination Qualified candidates will receive a link via email to complete a remote exam evaluating data entry skills, judgment, analytical abilities, multitasking, and attention to detail. You will have a specific time limit (typically 4 calendar days) to complete the exam. Resources such as free keyboarding speed programs and news reports on dispatch centers are available to help you prepare.
Step 3: Results and Ranking Upon completion, you will receive your score and rank. This ranking determines eligibility for interviews. Since this recruitment may have multiple examination dates, passing candidates are merged into an existing list, which may affect your rank. You may contact the Human Resources Department periodically to verify your status.
Step 4: Interview and Selection The Washoe County Sheriff's Office will schedule interviews from the list of top-scoring candidates. If your name is not selected for an interview, your name will remain on the eligibility list for future opportunities.
Candidates must be willing to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. The role requires the ability to remain calm during emergencies, work in a noisy environment, and sit for extended periods. Selected applicants must pass a rigorous background investigation, including fingerprint submission, a personal history statement, a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination, and an audio/hearing test.
Residency Requirement Washoe County requires all employees to reside in the state of Nevada or in neighboring California communities (such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, or Susanville) by their first day of work.
Washoe County is proud to be an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce that creates a sense of belonging for all employees and citizens. The County recruits, hires, trains, and promotes without regard to race, religion, gender, marital status, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected class under federal or state law.
