The Microbiology Unit Supervisor plays a pivotal leadership role within the Clinical Laboratory, responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising technical activities across Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Immunology, Media Preparation, and housekeeping sections. This position serves as a critical bridge between clinical operations and administrative oversight, reporting to the Administrative Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
Unlike the Clinical Microbiologist I, which focuses on journey-level performance of tests, this role emphasizes the supervision of complex analyses, the development of new procedures, and the training of staff. The incumbent ensures the unit operates with high efficiency, maintaining rigorous quality control standards while managing supply inventories and budget requests for capital items.
A typical day involves evaluating complex and critical test results, ensuring accuracy and clinical significance. The supervisor actively mentors technologists and laboratory trainees, conducting lectures, examinations, and performance evaluations. Beyond technical oversight, the role includes maintaining laboratory equipment, developing new testing norms, and staying current with field developments through literature reviews and seminars.
The incumbent frequently collaborates with pathologists and medical staff to resolve unit-related problems and may represent the laboratory at external meetings and conferences, including service on the San Joaquin General Hospital Infection Control Committee. In the absence of the Administrative Clinical Laboratory Technologist, the supervisor may assist in the broader administration of the Clinical Laboratory on a rotating basis.
Candidates must possess a valid license issued by the State of California, Department of Health as a Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist limited to Clinical Microbiology. Additionally, applicants require two years of experience equivalent to a Clinical Microbiologist.
San Joaquin General Hospital is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce. We welcome applications from qualified individuals regardless of background.
